Superintendent Johnny Elwood Gatlin, Sr.
Superintendent J. Elwood Gatlin, Sr. was born July 22, 1973 to the late Pastor James H. Gatlin, Sr. and District Missionary Phyllis White Gatlin. At an early age, he gave his life to Christ at the St. Paul’s Church Of God In Christ, Virginia Beach, VA. It was there under his father’s tutelage that he received his early Christian training and the foundation was laid for his life and his calling to the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ. In 1991, he graduated from Norfolk Christian High School and attended Mt. Olive College in Mt. Olive, NC.
On the first Sunday of November 1994, he began his first Pastorate in Cape Charles Virginia under Bishop Samuel L. Green, Jr. His next pastorate assignment was in Hurlock, MD under the late Bishop George Fletcher and Bishop Paul Harmon. At age 23, he was appointed Superintendent of the Salisbury District. During this stent, he could be found establishing churches in the Cambridge, MD and Denton, MD area.
In 2005, Supt. Gatlin relocated to North Carolina where he began his pastorate in Asheville NC. In 2007, the late Bishop C. E. Anderson, Sr. appointed him to the then Faith Chapel COGIC in Hendersonville, NC where he worked faithfully until his next assignment. December of 2012, Supt. Gatlin was sent to Bolton COGIC by Interim Bishop Jerry Wayne Macklin, (Second Assistant Presiding Bishop of the Church Of God In Christ). He was appointed in January of 2013 by Bishop Stenneth S. Powell, Sr. (Prelate of North Carolina Second Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction - Church Of God In Christ) as the Pastor of Gospel Harvest COGIC, formerly known as Bolton COGIC, Supt. Gatlin could be found preaching the gospel and implementing Godly strategies in this new millennium.
Passionate for ministry, Supt. Gatlin served faithfully as Superintendent of the Western NC District. He has served as Administrative Assistant in the North Carolina Second Jurisdiction under the late Bishop C. E. Anderson, Sr., the late Bishop Otis Lockett, Sr., and Bishop Jerry Wayne Macklin. Currently serves with Bishop Stenneth E. Powell, Sr.
In 2015, Supt. Gatlin heeded the call of God on his heart to birth churches. He began "The Brook Church" in Leland, North Carolina as well as other areas of North Carolina. These birthing’s in turn developed "The Brook Church International". On June 21, 2019, Supt. Gatlin was installed as pastor of Pentecostal Temple Church Of God In Christ in Florence, SC. Supt. Gatlin teaches that everyone should have a personal relationship with God and allow God to use him or her to bless others and to reach the unsaved through the message of Jesus Christ.
The Lord placed upon Supt. Gatlin’s heart to write a series of wisdom statements and daily confessions. When spoken daily, they will greatly enhance the life of any believer. These statements and confessions have been compiled into a book entitled “260 Gems of Wisdom 624 Daily Confessions.” Many have testified that they have been blessed by these confessions and have seen many prayers manifested.
In 2018, the long-time dream of becoming a pilot resurfaced in the heart of Supt. Gatlin. So, he began to pursue information for training and the necessary steps needed to make this dream come true. In May of 2019, Supt. Gatlin received his FAA Private Pilot’s License. He is currently pursuing his commercial license.
Supt. Gatlin and his wife Chavar Van Zandt-Gatlin are both life-long members of the Church Of God In Christ . The Gatlins have three sons and three daughters. Supt. Gatlin is committed to preaching a message of faith to reach the lost and broken-hearted and prepare them to live the life that God has purposed in them.
